Body planes

Understanding the anatomy of the foot is a basic science for Podiatrists to understand the foot. Before learning the bones, muscles, blood vessels, ligaments, tendon and nerves, the first step in learning anatomy of any part of the body, let alone the foot, is to understand the reference planes. The body has three reference planes. There is the transverse plane is the flat reference plane parallel to the ground in which the motions of foot abduction and adduction happen. The sagittal plane is the body plane in which foot plantarflexion and dorsiflexion occur in. The final is the frontal plane in which foot inversion and eversion occurs in. Without these body planes, there is no common language to understand the foot.
