The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge provides visitors with an outstanding opportunity to view hundreds of species of birds as well as unique mammals.  Several different habitats support animals on this 14,000 acre island Refuge, including marsh, dune, beach and maritime forest areas.  More than 300 species of birds have been observed here, including many migratory shorebirds and some endangered and threatened species. The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is a popular and well acclaimed birding area. You can see as well as photograph the beautiful Chincoteague Ponies at the National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island. Deer and Sika are also commonly spotted here, as are many other types of wildlife.  Red fox, raccoons and otters are some of the animals you can catch a glimpse of at the Refuge. You may spot whales, seals and dolphins at sea from beach areas.Fishing and hunting are allowed at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge according to regulations and guidelines, and you can also dig for clams and collect shells along the beach.  A visit to the Refuge is a terrific opportunity to spend time in one of Virginia’s most scenic natural areas.
